Quick & Dirty: Honduras’ Electric Live Set

By: Chandra Johnson

Walking into the back venue space of Baby’s All Right on Friday night, two things immediately hit you. The first is the sweltering heat—I’m talking the kind of thick heat that is so heavy hits you right in the gut. The second is Honduras, whose lo-fi scuzzed out rock sound smacks you across the face.

They’re the kind of openers (The Helio Sequence headlined) that are very hard to ignore because if their riffs don’t hook and reel you in, their stage presence will. There’s some mystic surrounding this Brooklyn based band that makes it hard not to fixate on them. They commend the stage like a seasoned band should—they play with an intensity but are inviting.

Lead singer Pat Phillips vocals are angsty not whiney, something like a mellifluous blend of Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner and dare we say a touch of Bowie.  The heat didn’t slow them down either. Halfway through “That Old Feeling,” Honduras is dripping beads of glistening sweat with every head bang until the song’s blunt end. Before going into single “Hollywood,” Phillips gives a shout out to Drake for putting out his album (Views) that day—a sentiment that makes this band even more likeable.

Not only do they have a stylish esthetic (Phillips was wearing the most amazing silk bomber after the show) but he, guitarist Tyson Moore, guitarist/vocalist Josh Wehle, and drummer Paul Lizarraga look like a band taken right out of the HBO hit series, Vinyl, a show that Phillips said a few of their friends were actually featured on.

It’s hard not to see their appreciation for punk pioneer Richard Hell—ripped t-shirts, tattoos and all, but there’s no punk attitudes when it comes to Honduras. Phillips is approachable, soft-spoken and extremely appreciative of any kind words sent his way. But we’ll still gush— Honduras could wake the dead with their electricity.
